Rio Maior has a diversified landscape with woods of pine-trees and eucalyptus, typical plains in the south and the Candeeiros mountains in the extreme north. There are salt pans which appear unexpectedly in the midst of rural setting, far from the sea, which have been explored for the last 900 years. The salt of Rio Maior comes from a well which water has seven times more salt than sea water. The Misericórdia Church, built in the 16th century, is another place of interest.
Rio Maior also provides good regional wines and has good typical restaurants. There are a number of agricultural and other festivals held throughout the year.
